Keep, upgrade or drop Google AI Plus

Google is emailing AI Plus subscribers that Pro models leave the plan on 13 November. Before you pay more or cancel, check what you actually use; the prompt below walks through it and gives you a verdict.

How-to

AI Plus keeps the Flash-Lite and Flash models; what goes is the option to pick Pro in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search. Pro stays on AI Pro and AI Ultra, and a chat you started on Pro carries on with a different model.

What AI Plus keeps, and what AI Pro adds

Prices are Google’s US prices, read 16 October 2026. Plans and prices differ by country, so check the plan page where you live.

AI Plus after the change

  • Models: Flash-Lite and Flash, with Deep Research and twice the free usage limit.
  • Storage: 400 GB, which you can share with up to five family members.
  • Price: $4.99 a month in the US.
  • Suits: everyday writing, summaries and planning that Flash handles, plus the storage.

AI Pro

  • Models: Pro and Gemini 4 Argon on top, with four times the free usage limit and a 1 million token window for long files (Google does not list AI Plus’s).
  • In Google apps: Gemini in Docs and Sheets, and Tasks in Gemini.
  • Storage and extras: 5 TB, plus YouTube Premium Lite for the plan manager only (not in every country), Google Home Premium Standard and Google Health Premium, per Google’s AI plans page.
  • Price: $19.99 a month in the US, $15 more than AI Plus.
  • Suits: a task you rely on that only Pro gets right, or hitting your limit most weeks.

Storage only, with no AI plan

  • What you get: 100 GB for $1.99 a month or 200 GB for $2.99 in the US. Basic and Standard list no AI benefits on Google’s plan page, so Gemini should work as on a free account, where most prompts go to Flash-Lite.
  • Suits: people who mainly paid for the space.

Four checks before your Pro access ends

  1. Find your date. Search your inbox for “AI Plus” and open the email from the Google One team, because Google gives each subscriber their own date. The emails reported so far say 13 November.
  2. List the tasks you switch to Pro for: the requests where you open the model menu before you type. Those are the tasks this change touches.
  3. Rerun them on Flash now. Ask the same thing in a new chat on Flash, at high effort if offered, and compare it with the Pro answer while you still can; a fail is the price of staying. If you might drop to storage only or cancel, try Flash-Lite too, since Google says free accounts send most prompts there.
  4. Check your storage and who shares it. The Google One storage page shows what you use. If you or a family member is over 15 GB, cancelling with no other plan stops Gmail sending and receiving and stops photo backups for that person, per Google’s cancellation page.

The prompt: which Google plan should I be on?

Paste it into Gemini or any AI chat once you have done the checks, and write “not sure” on any line you cannot fill. It sorts your tasks by what they really need, weighs your storage and your family, then gives one verdict with the steps to carry it out.

PromptWork out which Google AI plan I should be on
You are my subscription adviser: a careful, plain-speaking person who has seen people pay four times as much for a model they opened twice a month, and seen others cancel a plan and then find their email bouncing because their storage went over the free limit. Google is removing the Pro models from the Google AI Plus plan, and I need to decide whether to stay on AI Plus, move up to AI Pro, drop to a cheaper plan or cancel. A wrong call costs me money every month or breaks my email and photo backups, so work in stages, use only what I tell you, and write "not stated" wherever I have not said.

WHAT I HAVE READ ABOUT THE CHANGE (from Google's email and help pages, October 2026; if my own email or plan page says something different, mine wins)
- From the date in Google's email (13 November 2026 in the emails reported so far), AI Plus keeps the Flash-Lite and Flash models but loses the option to pick Pro models in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Google Search. Chats started on Pro can carry on with a different model.
- AI Pro and above keep Pro. AI Pro also lists Gemini 4 Argon, four times the free usage limit (AI Plus has twice), Gemini in Docs and Sheets, Tasks in Gemini, 5 TB of storage, and extras that vary by country.
- Free Gemini sends most prompts to Flash-Lite. Storage-only plans list no AI benefits, so expect Flash-Lite only there too.
- Cancelling a Google One plan keeps the storage until the end of the billing period, then drops me and every family member to 15 GB each. Anyone over 15 GB then cannot send or receive Gmail, upload to Drive or back up photos until they clear space.
- Only the family plan manager can upgrade or downgrade the plan.

ABOUT ME (I fill this in once; any line can say "not sure")
- Where I live and how I pay now: [e.g. "United States, AI Plus at $4.99 a month, billed monthly by Google", "bought through my phone carrier", or "free for a year with my new phone"]
- Prices on my own Google One plan page for every plan shown, including any storage-only plans: [paste them, e.g. "Basic 100 GB $1.99, Standard 200 GB $2.99, AI Plus 400 GB $4.99, AI Pro 5 TB $19.99", or "not checked"]
- The date in my email from Google: [e.g. "13 November 2026", or "no email found"]
- What I use Gemini for in a normal week, and how often: [one task per line, e.g. "drafting replies to customer emails, daily", "planning meals from what is in the fridge, twice a week", "checking formulas in my budget spreadsheet, about twice a month"]
- Which of those tasks I switch to Pro for, and why: [e.g. "the spreadsheet formulas, because Flash got one wrong in September", or "I never change the model"]
- What happened when I reran those tasks on Flash, or on free Gemini (Flash-Lite): [e.g. "emails: just as good on Flash-Lite; formulas: Flash got 2 of 3 right", or "not tested yet"]
- How often I hit my usage limit: [e.g. "never", "once or twice a month", "most weeks, usually during Deep Research"]
- Other Google AI features I rely on: [e.g. "Deep Research for comparing energy suppliers", "AI Mode in Search with Pro for travel planning", "Gemini proofreading in Gmail", "image or video generation", "none"]
- AI Pro extras I would actually use, or already pay for separately: [e.g. "I already pay for YouTube Premium Lite", "Gemini in Sheets would save me time", "none"]
- Storage I use now, from the Google One storage page: [e.g. "312 GB of 400 GB, mostly photos"]
- Who shares my plan, and whether I am the plan manager: [e.g. "I manage it; my partner and two teenagers use the storage, and one uses Gemini for homework", or "just me"]
- Other AI I pay for or can use for free: [e.g. "ChatGPT Plus through work", "the free version of Claude", "nothing"]
- The most I am willing to pay for AI and storage each month: [e.g. "$10"]
- What matters most to me: [pick one: "lowest cost", "keep everything working as it is", "the best answers for my hardest task"]

STAGE 1: READ AND CHECK FOR GAPS
Read everything once before writing anything. Then check you have what the decision depends on:
- If my storage figure is missing and cancelling or a smaller plan could be the answer, ask me for it, because it decides whether my email keeps working.
- If no task has been tested yet, do not ask; plan the test in Stage 5.
- If I am not the plan manager, the answer becomes advice on what to ask the manager; say so.
Ask at most three short questions, offering choices where you can, and stop until I answer. If nothing important is missing, say so in one line and carry on.

STAGE 2: SORT MY TASKS
Put each task under one label, with one line of reason:
- NEEDS PRO: I tested it on Flash and Flash failed in a way that matters, or I hit my usage limit doing it.
- FLASH IS FINE: I tested it on Flash and the answer was good enough, or it is everyday writing, summarising or planning I have never switched to Pro for. Note separately whether it was also tested on free Gemini (Flash-Lite).
- TEST BEFORE THE DATE: I switch to Pro for it but have not tried it on Flash yet.
- NOT A MODEL QUESTION: it depends on storage, family sharing or another Google product, and any model would do.
Never put a task under NEEDS PRO on your own sense of how hard it sounds; that label needs a failed test or a limit I hit. Then name my must-have task: the one I said matters most, or the one I do most often if I did not say.

STAGE 3: WEIGH THE MONEY AND THE STORAGE
- Work out the monthly and yearly difference between my current plan and each other option, using only the prices I pasted. If I pasted none, write "price: check your plan page" and compare on features alone.
- Count an AI Pro extra as saving me money only if I said I already pay for it or would use it.
- Storage: compare my used storage with what each option holds. Free is 15 GB. If I use more than an option holds, that option is ruled out unless I first clear space, and you say roughly how much I would need to clear.
- Family: if anyone shares my plan, list what each option takes away from them.
- If I pay through a phone carrier, a bundle or a free trial, flag "[CHECK how to change a plan billed this way]" and do not assume the usual Google One steps work.

STAGE 4: GIVE ONE VERDICT
Go through these branches in order and stop at the first that fits:
1. If I am not the plan manager: work out the verdict with the branches below, then write it as a short message I can send the manager.
2. NOT READY YET if my must-have task is TEST BEFORE THE DATE. Say which option each test result would lead to, and stay on AI Plus until then, since nothing changes before my date.
3. MOVE UP TO AI PRO if my must-have task is NEEDS PRO, or I hit my limit most weeks, and the difference fits my budget. If it does not fit, or I pasted no prices, say so and give the next best option.
4. MOVE THE HARD TASKS ELSEWHERE if a task is NEEDS PRO but I do it less than weekly and I already have another AI I can use. Keep the cheapest Google plan that holds my storage, and name which task to take where and how to check its first answer.
5. STAY ON AI PLUS if no must-have task is NEEDS PRO and something I rely on still needs AI Plus: storage more than any cheaper option holds, family use, or tasks that pass on Flash but are untested on Flash-Lite.
6. DROP TO A STORAGE-ONLY PLAN if one appears in the prices I pasted, holds my storage and my family's, and every task I rely on passed on free Gemini (Flash-Lite).
7. CANCEL if I and every family member are under 15 GB (or willing to clear down to it), every task I rely on passed on Flash-Lite or moves to another AI, and I use no paid-only feature.
If two branches fit equally, pick the one that matches what I said matters most, and mention the runner-up in one line.

STAGE 5: WHAT TO PRODUCE
- THE VERDICT: one line.
- WHY: three to five lines, each tied to something I told you.
- THE MONEY: what I pay now, what I would pay, and the difference per month and per year, or "price: check your plan page".
- WHAT I LOSE AND WHAT MY FAMILY LOSES: a plain list, or "nothing you said you use".
- HOW TO DO IT: the steps for my verdict, in order, with anything to do before the end of my billing period (such as clearing storage or telling my family) first. Do not invent menu names; if you are not sure of a step, write "[CHECK on the Google One plan page]".
- MY TEST PLAN, if any task is TEST BEFORE THE DATE or untested on Flash-Lite and that matters to the verdict: each task, which model and effort level to try, what a pass looks like, and the day to do it by, at least three days before my date.
- WHAT WOULD CHANGE THIS ANSWER: one or two things, such as a test failing or a price I have not checked.

CHECK YOUR WORK BEFORE YOU SHOW ME
Grade first, fix second. Check that every price came from what I pasted, every task label follows its rule, the storage arithmetic is right, no option you recommend leaves me or a family member over their storage, and you have not claimed a Google feature or menu that is not in this prompt or my notes. Fix anything that fails. Then end with two lines: the part of the verdict you are least sure of and why, and anything I wrote that you did not use.

Say you mostly pay for the photo space

  • Your notes: 312 GB used of 400 GB, and you manage the plan for a partner and two teenagers. US prices pasted from your plan page: Basic 100 GB $1.99, Standard 200 GB $2.99, AI Plus $4.99, AI Pro $19.99.
  • Your week: Gemini daily for email drafts, and Pro about twice a month for budget spreadsheet formulas. On Flash, one of three formulas came back wrong, and you have free ChatGPT.
  • The sort: the email drafts are your must-have and Flash is fine for them; the formulas need Pro, since Flash got one wrong.
  • The verdict: move the hard task elsewhere. Keep AI Plus, the cheapest plan that holds 312 GB, and check formulas in the other AI you already have.
  • The money: no change at $4.99 a month; AI Pro would add $15 a month, or $180 a year, for a task you do twice a month.
  • What your family loses: nothing, since the plan and its 400 GB stay as they are; anyone who picked Pro moves to Flash.
  • Least sure: whether the other AI gets the formulas right, so test it on one formula while you can still compare it with the Pro answer.

When you have your answer

Plan changes live in Google One under Manage membership then Change membership plan, with upgrade and downgrade options listed separately, and only the family plan manager can make them, per Google’s plan help page and family sharing page.

If you cancel, the storage and benefits stay until the end of your billing period, which gives you that long to clear space. To cancel, open Settings & help in Gemini, then Manage subscription, then Cancel membership.

The honest bit

  • The date comes from the email. Google’s help page on the change does not print 13 November; that date comes from the email as shared online and reported by Droid Life and Android Authority on 15 October (US time). Check the date in your own email.

A few quick questions

Can my family still use Gemini on AI Plus?

Yes. Google’s AI Plus benefits page says family members get select AI benefits at no extra cost, and they lose Pro on the same plan. Some usage limits, such as Google Flow’s, are shared by the whole family group.
