OpenAI began rolling locked chats out on 20 October to Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, but not ChatGPT for Healthcare, so it may not have reached you yet. Each locked chat waits under Projects > Locked chats, and resetting a forgotten PIN deletes all of them for good.
So sort before you lock: run the prompt below in a temporary chat, list your private chats by title only, and it tells you which to lock, which to export first, which to delete and which belong outside ChatGPT. If you only want to lock one chat, skip to the steps.
The prompt: sort your private chats
You are helping me decide what to do with the private conversations in my ChatGPT account. Think like a calm friend who works in privacy: practical, plain, and honest about what each option protects. A wrong call has real costs. Lock the wrong chat and one PIN reset could wipe it for good; leave the wrong one in my history and the next person who borrows my phone sees it. So ask before you assume, and never guess a fact about my account. IMPORTANT: Do not ask me to paste the contents of any chat. I will describe each chat by its title or topic only, and you work from that. If you need more detail to decide, ask me a yes/no or multiple-choice question about it, never for the text itself. ABOUT ME (I fill this in once; any line can say "not stated") - My ChatGPT plan: [e.g. "Free", "Plus", "Pro", "Business through my employer", "Edu through my university", "not sure"] - Whose account this is: [e.g. "mine alone", "a work account my employer manages", "one login my partner and I both use"] - The devices I use ChatGPT on: [e.g. "my phone only", "a family tablet and my work laptop", "the shared computer at home"] - Who else can pick up or see those devices: [e.g. "nobody", "my partner knows my phone passcode", "I share my screen in meetings every day"] - Can I see "Lock chat" in a chat's ••• menu yet: [yes / no / have not checked] - What I am worried about: [e.g. "a partner seeing a surprise I am planning", "colleagues seeing a health question during a screen share", "losing these chats", "the company keeping them"] - My chats to sort, one per line, title or topic only, plus anything I know about each: [e.g. "Anniversary trip ideas, has a shared link", "Questions about a test result", "Salary negotiation script, in my Job hunt project", "Questions for a family lawyer", "Weekly meal plan, has a scheduled task"] FACTS TO WORK FROM (from OpenAI's help page on locked chats, October 2026; if my app looks different, write [CHECK IN APP] and go with what I see) - A locked chat leaves regular history, pinned chats and regular search, and opens only from Projects > Locked chats with a 4-digit account PIN, or with Face ID, Touch ID or device unlock on a phone where I turn that on. - Locking hides a chat. It adds no end-to-end encryption, does not change how long OpenAI keeps the chat, does not change my model-training setting, and does not remove anything ChatGPT remembered before I locked it. - Forgetting the PIN does not by itself delete anything. Resetting a forgotten PIN permanently deletes every locked chat plus the files and memories kept only with them, and OpenAI Support cannot recover them. Changing the PIN while I still know it keeps them. - On ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu, locked chats still appear in the message logs my organisation can reach through OpenAI's compliance tools. Admins cannot unlock them or reset my PIN. - A shared link to a chat keeps working after I lock the chat; I have to delete the link separately. - Locking a chat that sits in a project moves it out of that project, so it loses the project's instructions, files and memory. - These cannot be locked: temporary, archived and group chats, chats created from a shared link, chats with a scheduled task (the task has to be deleted first, including a paused one), chats with meeting recordings or background tasks, and chats with responses saved as project sources. - I cannot search across locked chats, only browse them. - A data export comes from Settings > Data controls > Export data, covers the whole account, can take up to 7 days to arrive, the download link expires 24 hours after the email arrives, and is not self-service on Business or Enterprise. The help page does not say whether locked chats are included. STAGE 1. CHECK THE SET-UP Read what I filled in. If my plan, whose account it is, or my chat list is "not stated" or blank, ask me for those in one short message and stop until I answer. If I said "Lock chat" is not in my menu yet, tell me the feature is rolling out gradually and carry on, because the sort still holds once it arrives. STAGE 2. FLAG THE SITUATION THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING Before sorting, say which of these apply and what each means for me: - If it is a work or school account (Business, Enterprise or Edu): tell me plainly that locking hides a chat from people around me and does nothing about my organisation, and that on Enterprise and Edu locked chats stay in compliance logs. Anything I would not want my employer or school to read goes in the KEEP OUT pile. - If several people share one login: tell me that anyone who can sign in and pass the identity check could reset the PIN, which wipes every locked chat, and that the Locked chats project may still show in the sidebar even while titles are hidden. Recommend separate accounts before I rely on locking. - If a device is shared, or someone else knows my phone passcode or has a face or fingerprint saved on it: tell me to leave Face ID, Touch ID and device unlock off on that device and use the PIN, because device unlock may let them in. - If I share my screen often: remind me to press Lock now when I finish with a locked chat, and that other open devices may keep showing a locked chat's title until they refresh. - If none apply, say so in one line. STAGE 3. SORT EACH CHAT INTO ONE PILE For every chat on my list, pick one pile, give one plain reason, and name the next action: - LOCK: I want to keep it and go back to it, and the risk is someone near my screen or device. If it has a shared link, add "delete the shared link too". If it has a scheduled task, add "delete the task first". If it is in a project, warn me it will leave the project. - EXPORT, THEN DECIDE: I would be upset to lose it. A locked chat is one PIN reset away from gone, so tell me to request an export first, download it within a day of the email arriving, and check the downloaded file actually contains this chat before I lock or delete it. If my plan has no self-service export, say so and suggest I copy the parts I need somewhere safe by hand. - DELETE: I do not need it again. Tell me deletion is permanent, and that anything ChatGPT remembered from it may still sit in saved memories, so I should check my memories for that topic. - KEEP OUT OF CHATGPT: the topic should not go into this account at all, for example anything my employer could read on a work account, or details I would not want stored for any length of time. Suggest where it could go in general terms (a personal account, a temporary chat, a person I trust, a professional) without naming specific apps you cannot vouch for. - LEAVE AS IS: it is not sensitive enough to bother. If you cannot decide without knowing something, put the chat under NEED MORE INFO with the one question you need answered. Never invent what a chat contains from its title; if a title is ambiguous, ask. STAGE 4. GIVE ME THE PLAN IN ORDER Show a table with four columns: chat, pile, reason, next action. Then give a numbered order of work that avoids losing anything: exports first, then delete shared links and scheduled tasks, then lock, then delete, then check memories. Mark any menu step you are unsure of with [CHECK IN APP]. STAGE 5. THE PIN Tell me to pick a PIN I will remember and do not use for my phone or bank card, and to write it down somewhere safe offline, because forgetting it leaves a choice between staying locked out and wiping everything. Remind me that changing it while I still know it keeps my chats. SELF-CHECK BEFORE YOU ANSWER - I did not ask for, or guess at, the contents of any chat. - Every chat on the list sits in exactly one pile or under NEED MORE INFO. - Anything I said I cannot lose has an export step before any lock or delete. - The work-account, shared-login and shared-device warnings appear only where they apply. - Every fact I stated matches the list above, and anything else is marked [CHECK IN APP] or "not stated".
Lock a chat, then open it again
- Check you have it. Open any chat’s
•••menu and look forLock chat. If it is missing, the gradual rollout has not reached your account yet. On a computer, it needs the website or the new ChatGPT desktop app for Mac or Windows. - Clear what blocks it. Delete any scheduled task attached to the chat, paused ones included, because ChatGPT will not offer
Lock chatwhile a task is linked. If you ever shared the chat, delete that link too, since OpenAI’s help page says the old link keeps working after you lock. - Lock it. Choose
••• > Lock chat, confirm withLock chatagain, and create your 4-digit PIN the first time. The title leaves your history and search, though search can take a little while to catch up. If the chat sits in a project, locking moves it out, so it loses that project’s instructions, files and memory. - Add Face ID only on a phone that is yours alone. On iPhone, turn on
Use Face IDorUse Touch IDunderSettings > Security and login > Account PIN; on Android, chooseUse device unlockwhen asked. Device unlock may let in anyone who knows your phone passcode or has a fingerprint saved on it. - Open it from Projects. Go to
Projects > Locked chats, enter your PIN or use your face, and pick the chat. You cannot search across locked chats, so rename vague ones through the•••menu while you are there. - Press Lock now when you finish. A phone relocks after a minute away. On the web, access lasts until you leave the tab, refresh or close it, so press
Lock nowbefore you share your screen or hand the device over, because anyone looking at an open locked chat can copy it. - Unlock it for good once the secret is out. Open the chat, then
••• > Unlock chat(Unlockon iPhone). It goes back to your regular history, and a chat that came from a project stays out of that project.
What to check before you rely on it
- Forgetting your PIN does not delete your chats by itself. Resetting it does, permanently. A reset at
Settings > Security and login > Account PINpermanently deletes every locked chat and the files kept only with them, and OpenAI Support cannot get them back. If you still know the PIN, useChangethere, which keeps your chats. - Locking only changes who can open the chat on your screen. OpenAI says locking adds no end-to-end encryption, keeps the chat for the same time as before, and leaves your training setting and earlier memories as they were.
- Memory still flows in. Locked chats can still read your regular Memory. Once a chat is unlocked, the whole chat can feed ChatGPT’s regular memory, so check your memory afterwards.
- Ads can still appear. If ads are available on your account, they may also appear in locked chats.
- Work and school accounts keep a copy for your organisation. On Enterprise and Edu, locked chats still appear in the message logs your employer or school can reach through OpenAI’s compliance tools, and an admin cannot unlock them or reset your PIN for you.
- Other screens catch up slowly. A laptop or tablet with ChatGPT already open can show a locked chat’s title until its list refreshes, and an iPhone may still show a chat it had already loaded, so refresh every open device before you hand one over.
- Some chats cannot be locked. Temporary, archived and group chats, chats made from a shared link, and chats with meeting recordings are all out.
The honest bit
Locking guards your screen and your device from the people around you. If the worry is OpenAI, your employer or a court, it changes nothing, which is why the prompt has export, delete and keep-out piles.
To check a lock worked, refresh ChatGPT on every device you use, wait a few minutes, then search your history for a word from the chat’s title and confirm it no longer shows up.
The facts here come from OpenAI’s help pages on locked chats and exporting your data, read 26 October 2026.
Do it now
Open a temporary chat, paste the prompt and list the three chats you would least like anyone to see. Pick a PIN you use nowhere else and write it down offline, then clear out what those chats left in memory with your monthly AI memory clean-up.
A few quick questions
What is the difference between a locked chat and a temporary chat?
A temporary chat stays out of your history and out of model training while it stays temporary, and you cannot come back to it later. A locked chat is saved, so you can return to it, and it follows your usual training setting. A temporary chat cannot be locked.
Why is my screenshot of a locked chat blank?
On Android, OpenAI says the app hides locked chats in screenshots, so they come out black or blank. Unlock the chat for good, or copy the text, if you need a record.
