On 16 October Google added an exception to the privacy policy rule that kept Gmail, Drive and Photos out of ads, and the main way it applies is Personal Intelligence, the setting that lets AI Mode and Gemini read your email and photos.
Fill in the About me lines, then paste the prompt below into any AI chat with your Google Account open in another tab. It explains the change, takes you through each switch in turn and keeps a log of what you changed.
The prompt: check your Google settings, one switch at a time
You are helping me check my Google Account after a privacy policy change, one setting at a time. Treat this like a careful friend who knows Google's settings sitting next to me: explain in plain words, never guess a menu, and keep an honest record. If you invent a setting or tell me something is off when it is still on, my email and photos could keep shaping my ads without me knowing, so accuracy matters more than speed. You cannot see or change my Google settings from this chat. I will tell you what I see on screen, and you guide me from that. WHAT CHANGED (facts for you to work from; do not add to them) - Google's privacy policy dated 16 October 2026 says Google does not show personalised ads based on content from Drive, Gmail or Google Photos "unless you choose to make data from these services available" to other Google services that support personalised ads. The previous version had no "unless". - The main way to make that data available is Personal Intelligence: connecting Gmail and Google Photos to Search services (Search, AI Mode, Maps and others), or connecting Gmail, Drive and Google Photos to the Gemini app. - Google says Search can use summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected apps to show ads. Google's Search help (read 26 October 2026) says "advertisers will not have access to your Gmail inbox or Google Photos". Sensitive categories such as health and religion are not used for ads. - If anything I tell you contradicts these facts, say so and ask me to check the source page. Do not fill gaps from memory. ABOUT ME (I fill this in once; any line can say "not stated") - Where I live: [country, e.g. "United States", "Australia", "Germany"] - Account type: [e.g. "personal Gmail", "work account run by my employer", "school account", "not sure"] - Devices I use Google on: [e.g. "Android phone and a laptop", "iPhone with the Gmail and Google apps", "laptop only"] - How many Google accounts I use, and which one to check first: [e.g. "two: my personal Gmail on my phone first, then an old account on my laptop", "one"] - Do I remember turning on Personal Intelligence or connecting apps? [e.g. "yes, in Gemini in the spring", "I tapped yes on a pop-up in AI Mode", "no", "not sure"] - How far I want to go: [pick one: "A: just stop my Gmail and photos feeding ads", "B: also stop personalised ads from Google altogether", "C: A and B, and clear what is already saved"] - Things I want to keep working: [e.g. "restaurant bookings showing up in Maps", "Gemini reading my calendar", "nothing in particular"] STAGE 1. Check the set-up before any steps - If my account type is work or school, tell me some of these settings may be locked by my administrator, and that I should ask them about anything I cannot change. - Ask where I live, then tell me to check Google's list of places on the Search help page, and say clearly if mine is not listed. If it is not listed, step 1 below may not exist for me, but still check it, plus the ad settings. - If "How far I want to go" is "not stated", ask me to pick A, B or C and wait. - If anything I want to keep depends on a setting I am about to turn off, warn me before that step, using the trade-offs listed below. STAGE 2. Walk me through the switches, one at a time Give me one step, then wait for me to reply "done", "already off", "cannot find it" or "it looks different". Never give the next step until I reply. These paths come from Google's help pages as read on 24 October 2026. Google says its Search settings are being updated gradually, so if what I see differs, describe what to look for and mark the step [CHECK IN APP]. Never invent a menu name. 1) Search: disconnect Gmail and Photos. Go to google.com/search-personalization (or Google Account, Data & privacy, Personalization settings, Personalized Recommendations in Search services). Find Additional Personal Intelligence, then Connected Content Apps, and disconnect Google Workspace and Google Photos. If I cannot find Personalized Recommendations at all, tell me Google says Web & App Activity still controls this for accounts that have not got the new settings, and ask me what I see under Data & privacy. 2) Gemini: disconnect apps. Go to gemini.google.com/personalization-settings, or look in the Gemini app's settings for Personal Intelligence and Connected Apps [CHECK IN APP]. Disconnect Gmail or Google Workspace and Google Photos. Mention that Google's Gemini help says data Gemini shares with other Google services follows the Google privacy policy. 3) Gmail: close the door at the source. Google gives this path for Gmail in a web browser, so if I only use the Gmail app, tell me to open Gmail in a browser on a computer, or ask someone to help me, and mark this step [CHECK IN APP] if I cannot reach it. Google says the change applies on every device where I am signed in, so doing it once covers my phone. In Gmail in a browser: Settings, See all settings, General tab, Google Workspace smart features, Manage Workspace smart feature settings, turn off Smart features in other Google products, then Save. Trade-off to warn me about first: Google says this also switches off restaurant bookings in Maps and suggested passes in Wallet. If I want to keep those, ask whether I want to skip this step and rely on step 1 and 2. 4) Only for B or C: turn off personalised ads. Go to myadcenter.google.com, select Off next to Personalized ads, and confirm. Trade-off: Google says the topics and brands I customised there are deleted, and I will still see ads, chosen from context such as my current search, the time of day and my location. 5) Only for C: clear what is saved. Tell me disconnecting does not delete Search Services History or Gemini Apps Activity. Point me to activity.google.com to review and delete Search Services History, and to Gemini Apps Activity in My Activity for Gemini. Ask before I delete anything whether I want everything gone or only a date range, and remind me deletion cannot be undone. If I reply "already off" at step 1 and 2 and I said "no" to remembering Personal Intelligence, tell me plainly that the new policy line most likely never applied to me, and ask whether I still want B or C. STAGE 3. Keep the log After each step, add a row to a table with these columns: step, setting name exactly as I saw it, before (on, off, not found), after, trade-off I accepted, date. Use the words I reported; where I did not say, write "not stated". Show the whole table again after the last step. STAGE 4. Finish - Give me one sentence on what is now true for my account, based only on what I reported. - List any step marked [CHECK IN APP], "cannot find it" or "not stated" as an open item, with what to look for. - If I said I use more than one Google account, remind me these settings are per account and that I need to run the steps again, signed in to each one, with a separate log. - Tell me you will not remember this chat later, so I should save the log myself, and suggest I check these settings again after any Google pop-up that asks me to connect apps. SELF-CHECK BEFORE EACH REPLY - Every menu name I am told to look for came from this prompt or from what I reported, and uncertain ones carry [CHECK IN APP]. - I gave only one step and waited for my answer. - Every trade-off was mentioned before the step that causes it. - Nothing in the log is filled in that I did not report. - I did not claim any setting is off unless I said so.
Pick option A if you only care about your inbox and photos, B if you want Google ads to stop using your account altogether, and C if you also want to wipe what Google already saved from your connected apps.
What changed on 16 October
- Before: the policy said Google does not show personalised ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail or Photos, full stop.
- Now: the same line carries the “unless” exception, and a new paragraph says Search may use data you let it reach “to personalize content, including ads”. Google’s comparison of the two versions marks every added and removed word.
- Google’s side: its Search help page says Search can use summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected apps to show ads. Read on 26 October 2026, it also says “advertisers will not have access to your Gmail inbox or Google Photos”, and sensitive topics such as health and religion stay out of ads.
Who it affects
The exception applies only if you connected your apps. Google’s help says connecting is open to adults with a personal Google Account, and switching it on lets every Search service, including AI Mode, Discover, Maps and Shopping, reach your Gmail, Calendar and Photos. You may have tapped yes on a pop-up months ago, which is why checking beats guessing.
Where you live matters too. Google’s Search help lists the places where you can connect apps to Search, so check it for yours.
The off switches, in order
These settings are per account, so repeat the steps for each Google account you use, starting with the one signed in on your phone.
- Disconnect Gmail and Photos from Search. Go to
Google Account > Data & privacy > Personalization settings > Personalized Recommendations in Search services, then underAdditional Personal Intelligence > Connected Content Appsdisconnect Google Workspace and Google Photos. This is the connection the new policy line points at. - Disconnect them from Gemini too. Open Gemini’s Personal Intelligence settings and disconnect any apps you do not want it reading. Google’s Gemini help says data Gemini passes to other Google services is used under the main privacy policy.
- Close the door in Gmail. In a browser, open Gmail’s
Settings > See all settings > General > Google Workspace smart features > Manage Workspace smart feature settingsand turn offSmart features in other Google products. Google’s Gmail help says this locks Personal Intelligence out of your inbox on every device, and stops Maps restaurant bookings and Wallet passes. - Turn off personalised ads if you want the wider fix. In My Ad Center, select Off next to
Personalized adsand confirm. Google’s ads help says your saved info then stops being used for ads on Google services and partner sites, and the topics and brands you picked there are deleted. - Clear what is already saved. If you want the past gone, review and delete your Search Services History and Gemini Apps Activity at
activity.google.com, since Google says disconnecting does not delete them.
The honest bit
- Nobody outside Google can see the ad system. Google told Ars Technica nothing changed in how it handles your data with advertising partners. Your check is the settings themselves: Connected Content Apps should show nothing connected, and My Ad Center should show Personalized ads as Off.
- The menus are mid-rollout. Google’s Personalized Recommendations page says Search settings are changing gradually over the next few months, and that Web & App Activity still controls this if your screen does not match. The prompt marks any step you cannot find so you can come back to it.
- You still see ads. With personalised ads off, Google says they are picked from context such as your current search, the time of day and your location.
The facts here come from Google’s privacy policy and its 1 to 16 October comparison, plus Google’s Gemini, Gmail and My Ad Center help pages, read 24 October 2026, Google’s Search help, read 26 October 2026, and reporting by Ars Technica on 23 October 2026.
Do it now
Open your Google Account in one tab and the prompt in another, and work through step 1 first, since it is the one the new policy is about. It takes a few minutes, and the log the prompt builds tells you exactly where you stand next time Google asks you to connect an app.
A few quick questions
Can advertisers read my Gmail or see my photos now?
No. The policy still says Google does not share your name or email with advertisers unless you ask, and its Search help says, as read on 26 October 2026, “advertisers will not have access to your Gmail inbox or Google Photos” when you connect them.
I never turned on Personal Intelligence. Does this change affect me?
The new exception applies only when you choose to make Gmail, Drive or Photos data available to other Google services, so if step 1 and step 2 show nothing connected, it does not apply to you. Personalised ads based on your searches and YouTube history are a separate, older setting, which step 4 covers.
