If you searched "can Claude edit videos", the straight answer is no, not in a normal chat, because video is not a file type Claude accepts. It can still plan the edit, pick your best minute from a transcript and write the captions, and the table below gives that same kind of answer, with the tool to use instead, for every job people keep asking about.

Claude can read text, images and documents, create Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, search the web, remember you and act through connected apps, but it cannot generate photos, video, voice or music, edit video in a chat, transcribe an audio file or make a phone call.
What Claude can and can't do
"Can" means it works in a normal chat. "Partly" means it works with a connector (a link to another app that you switch on), Claude Code, Cowork (in the desktop app, on paid plans) or some setup. "Paid only" means a paid plan, and Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly. On a phone, swipe the table sideways.

Why the answer is so often no
Anthropic's models page puts the rule in one line, and most of the can't column follows from it. A video, a voice file or a photo is something other than text, so Claude can describe it, plan it and script it, and making or changing the actual file needs a connector, Claude Code (the version that works on files on your computer) or a different tool.
Kristofer Palmvik's write-up from 4 May 2026, Claude knows FFmpeg, but it has no idea where the video is, shows what that looks like up close. He built a small add-on (an MCP server, which lets Claude run another program) that connected Claude Desktop to FFmpeg, a free video tool, and Claude wrote correct commands and got his crossfades right first time. What it got wrong, in every session, was where the files actually were: in his words, its understanding of where it was running "was not correct". Claude knows how editing works, and it has no hands on your footage until a tool gives it some. His setup is a developer's project, so take the lesson from it and use Descript for your first edit.
If you want the technical route later, video-use on GitHub pairs Claude Code with FFmpeg and needs an ElevenLabs key, and its own README is upfront that the model never actually watches the footage. Charlie Hills wrote on his Substack in May 2026 that he hands edits to Claude Code and still cuts the raw footage himself first, with each render taking 10 to 30 minutes. Both are worth reading once the basics feel easy.
When it says can't, split the job
- Give Claude the thinking part first. The script, the shot list, the caption wording, the brief for the image. That is text out, which is what Claude does best, so the hard decisions are made before you open another app.
- Hand the file part to the tool in the table. Descript for the cut, Firefly for the picture, ElevenLabs for the voice. Each one is built for that single kind of file, so it does the part Claude cannot touch in a chat.
- Bring the words back to Claude. Run your recording through MacWhisper or Descript and paste the transcript into the chat. Once your video is words on a page, Claude can find your best 60 seconds, tighten the captions and write the post that goes with it. Ask for the first and last line of each stretch, never the times: unless your transcript has timestamps, Claude can only guess where a moment sits, and you can find quoted words in Descript by searching for them.
- Know the three combos that work. For a reel, MacWhisper or Descript makes the transcript, Claude picks the stretch, you cut it in Descript, and Claude writes the captions and the post. For a picture, Claude writes the image prompt (subject, setting, light, framing) and you paste it into Firefly, unless it is a chart or diagram, which Claude builds in the chat. For a voice-over, Claude writes the script at speaking length and you record it on your phone or paste it into ElevenLabs.
Where the line is
- Some rows depend on your plan and your app. The website, the desktop app and the phone app do different things, and paid-only rows stay closed on the free plan. Before you rely on a row for real work, open its linked page and look for your plan's name.
- Claude can be wrong about itself. Ask it "can you do this?" cold and it may say yes to something your plan or app does not have. The prompt below makes it check first and say "check this in your settings" when it is unsure.
The "Can Claude do this?" prompt
Paste this into a new chat before you start a job, and fill in the parts (the last one is optional). Claude restates the job, asks for your plan and app if you left them out, gives each part of the job a can, partly, can't or check-first verdict, names who does the parts it cannot, and ends by flagging the line it is least sure about. It works on the free plan.

A few quick questions
Can Claude edit videos?
Not in a normal chat, because video is not one of the file types you can upload. Claude can plan the edit, pick the best moments from a transcript and write your captions, and a tool like Descript, which edits video by editing the transcript and has a free plan, does the cutting.
Can Claude make images?
